I woke up early this morning to check out yesterday’s shows from NYFW and I’m already in love with so much! First comes Steven Alan. His collection had a masculine dust-bowl era feel, but also mixed with several more girly pieces and prints. The inspiration: “riffed on thirties-era aesthetics, with an emphasis on worn tailoring and gray and sepia-toned palette straight out of Dorothea Lange. The cited inspiration was Diego Rivera – another icon of the up-with-labor, bread line era” (via style.com) is the SAME inspiration my group and I settled on a few days ago for our next design project… which means that I find this entire collection even more inspiring than I normally do (didn’t think that was possible!!).
These are just a few of my favorite looks, check out the rest of the collection here.

I just came across this new site, NOWNESS, and it’s pretty enthralling. They describe themselves as:
“… the digital leader in luxury storytelling. Each day, NOWNESS showcases an exclusive premiere of the most inspiring stories influencing contemporary culture and global lifestyle, previewing the latest in fashion, gastronomy, art, film, music, design, travel and sport.
NOWNESS collaborates with the world’s foremost designers, creatives and thinkers in the luxury industry. NOWNESS is an innovative space where ideas, both timeless and timely, are first and foremost.”
You should definitely take some time and check out their site, but first you should watch the video they did about the Spring/Summer 2012 McQueen collection. In it, Cathy Horyn (New York Times fashion critic) chats with Sarah Burton at the label’s Paris atelier about the house’s marine-inspired collection.
I couldn’t figure out how to embed the video here, so (after checking out some of my fav screenshots of the video below) click on over to here and bless your eyes and ears!
Once again, it’s been quite a while since I’ve blogged. I don’t really have an excuse, all I can say is that the combination of grad school, Thanksgiving, and getting sick all contributed to the lack of posts. Finals end in about a week, and I’m planning on posting more regularly over winter break. This is gonna be a quick one, because I need to start working on my my final project for Fashion Illustration. I’m going to draw these images in my own style, then I will choose my favorite one and lightbox that drawing onto some fabric, and when all that’s said and done I’m going to hand embroider the dress of the fabric drawing.
The one on the left is from the Alexander McQueen Spring ’09 collection and the one on the right is from the Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring ’10 collection. It’s going to be a lot of work, but it’ll definitely be worth it. I’m going to be posting pictures of it, as well as some of my other design projects after the semester ends, so stay tuned.
Oh also, if you’re interested I’ve added a new link to the LOST and FIND ME page up at the top. It’s a link to my last.fm profile. Before you check it out I want to preface the top artists and songs in my library by saying that I signed up for last.fm quite a long time ago, and then stopped using it for a couple of years… but now I’m back and scrobbling new tunes!
I’ve put together a quick Christmas wish-list for you all to peruse. It was my first time using Polyvore. I had a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to use it more in the future! I would absolutely love everything/anything on the list (obvi), but if I had to choose I’d say that the #1 thing would probably be the Madewell high-riser jeans. I’m so over low-rise/hip-hugger style… it’s not even funny. You all might think I’m crazy now, but just wait and see because the natural waist look is coming back (thank goodness!!).
Okay, I’ve officially spent way too much time avoiding school work… so I’m just going to say enjoy!
Dare I say Sunday was even better than Saturday? Most people spent the entire day complaining about the heat, but I though it felt wonderful. It was great to be back in Texas where the sun shines bigger and brighter!
Walking to the Festival.
Working on my TOMS tan while waiting for my friends.
I didn’t know these guys before seeing them… but I did recognize one of their songs, which was kind of weird. They were great and I’m definitely going to be purchasing some of their music!
This morning news broke that Alexander McQueen was found dead of apparent suicide in his apartment in central London at age 40.
His website currently has this statement posted:
“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”
McQueen’s secondary line, McQ, was to be presented TODAY as part of New York Fashion Week. KCD, the PR company handling the show, says the presentation is canceled.
Marc makes me feel things that no other man ever could.
